The "Aussie Incident"
ok ill finally come clean and discuss the resoning behind something that ive been thinking about for the last 5 years... the plan to up tools and clear out.
now whilst i have no immediate plans to do this i certainly wont rule it out in the future and the when/if will depend on several factors... infact 4... 3 bad ones, 1 good one... here they are
SOCIAL RUIN: basically this means that i basically lose all my friends... either by falling out or departure. despite my often negative impression of society i do have several good friends... but issues often get between us and with my often suspicious mental state atm im not really one to tolerate bullshit and my best times atm are times alone... and some of my mates have relocated.
EMPLOYMENT WOES: one of the things that often stops ppl moving other than friends is of course WORK. is there jobs where you moving to? this aint really a factor when your current employment situation deteriorates though... especially when your unable to get another job. As for mine... well its great atm but next year could be interesting... this is prob the biggest factor for me cos i love being a postie and whilst i can relocate and work as a postie in my next location kts no guarantee and also the places on my list dont really sound appealing to deliver mail at... infact ive never really fancied doing mail in Australia... i allways sed that id go back to maccas if i moved over there as their min wage is excellent and the shoft work would suit the main reason for me moving over there.... kitesurfing.
KITESURFING WOES: now before you assume that ive allready left in view of my very little time on the water in the last few years you need to remember the reasoning is NOT condition based. id only move out of Auckland if i was pissed off with the kitesurfing conditions... which to be honest in Auckland are quite good weatherwise... good beaches facing all directions with lots of windy days. However other factors like traffic, access (ie flat island) and fachist laws in the future could also spell the end to me kiting in auckland. the reasoning for me not kiting much atm is WORK based... all id have to do is get back to shift work or work less hours at post and this problem would largely be solved. but this is a big factor in my new destination and as a result otherwise perfect destinations have been ruled out cos of kitesurfing issues ( like central Otago).
STRONG FINANCIAL POSITION: now this is the good thing... and as you would expect this is prob the furtherest of the 4 from happening atm. however the destination has a huge factor on this too cos house prices are the key here and all of the places ive considered (including in OZ) have relatively cheap housing.
so what are the places ive considered? And why not OZ?
i loved visiting OZ... the kitesurfing was good, i love the weather... its a great place to have a good time... however there are ALOT of fachist laws over there which make nanny state NZ sound like the land of the free in comparision.
Even from a purely kitesurfing perspective its not pute bliss... rumours of compulsory insurance and bans of kiting at certain beaches... not to mention the critters that frequent the waters over there and the beach scene that totally different to what im used to in NZ.... and i love the relaxed beach scene in NZ. kiting in OZ is mostly a fair weather thing... which means sunnies, eye protection, no wetsuit ( which makes you venerable to sunburn and jellyfish). im mostly a bad weather kiter... either kiting overcast stormy conditions or kiting in partly cloudy winter conditions. i avoid kiting in hot summer sun in NZ cos unless its cranking at Bramley then the conditions will be shite up here in auckland if its hot and sunny. Bramley is an exception cos it works well in thermal driven north winds and doesnt suffer from crowds like eastern beach etc.
Once you deviate from kitesurfing the reasoning to live in OZ become less numerious for me. sure fine the girls are nicer and its a better place to socialise with friends... but i can enjoy those things when i visit... and im not a clubbing womanizer anyway... my existance has largely consisted of being ANTISOCIAL... bit i do admit i do like the Australian ppl... they come accross as having an honestly that is sorely lacking in NZ.
but there are too many laws here... with the exception of cars.... its a much better place to own a car over in OZ... no WOF fachism and cheaper petrol. but once back on water the nazis are there waiting... rumours of you needing a licence to drive a boat and even a jetski... now dunno if thats actually the case... but a mate told me that who lives over there.
Ive got a few more interests over the last few years... im not just a kite addict... im slowly getting into guns... and if your into guns DONT move to OZ. like In the UK a few violent incidents involving firearms in the 80s and 90s lead to some extreme gun laws introduced. Both countries clamped down on longguns... especially Australia where the strict criteria wasnt limited to just semiautos... pump action shotties were also targetted. England on the other hand got really strict on handguns... infact as far as im aware nearly ALL handguns are banned after the Dunblane shootings in 1996. A similar incident a few weeks later in Tasmania spawned the excessive ban on longguns in OZ.... handguns were largely unaffected but other sorts of weapons were hit hard with major legislation... these include airguns and crossbows where you need a licence. airsofts guns are banned (yep harmless bb guns) and even paintball hasnt been spared. even other weapons like knives are getting hit with fachist laws... same in England as well where knife violence is the highest in the western world. Now contrast that with my current residence of NZ where there is basically no legislation concerning possession of knives as well as most ranged weapons with the exceptions of PCP slug guns and nearly all firearms. and despite the relaxed laws on weapons possession the crime rate in NZ is still quite low... most of its alcohol related and involves no weapons. in a country where a basic licence will allow you to own any longgun thats not semi auto or auto and even quite a few semi auto ones as well there are only 7 gun murders a year... and most of those are with illegal weapons. So yeah to be honest that was prob the biggest turnoff for me in regards to living in OZ.... a great to visit, party and kite but im gonna stay in NZ.... but there are a few other options.... ill discuss them in a another article
